Posters of Islam's third holiest site, The Dome of the Rock on the Haram ash-Sharif, are as close as a non-Muslim can get these days to this impressive structure. The site where it is believed Muhammad ascended to heaven is said to be "the closest to paradise one can get on earth" and was completed in 691AD. The Haram ash-Sharif has been closed to Non-Muslims since Ariel Sharon's visit to the site on September 20th, 2000 sparked off this most recent intifada. Built on the same spot where Jewish belief states the Great Jewish Temple stood until 70AD, this site is "the" hotbed of political and religious disputes.
